All the cliffs of the Marina Alta are home to caves and coves. It was built upon the instructions of architect Antonelli who, in a report from 1563, suggested creating a line of watchtowers along this coast. The reason for this: <\/span><b>high pirate activity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which prevented the consolidation of population centres.<\/span><\/p><p><b style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The aim was to guarantee the area\u2019s security <\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">and promote settlement because, as the historian Cavanilles noted, there were still no towns here in 1779. The area remained uninhabited even after the construction of the castle in 1742 to reinforce its defences. Its walls sit on a circular base, with a perimeter of 26 metres, and rise at a gradient to a height of 11 metres to reach the flat area above \u2013 the signalling and lookout area.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">If you take a closer look, you\u2019ll see that <\/span><b style=\"background-color: transparent;\">the construction is solid up to over half of its height<\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">, allowing it to resist any siege. Only one inhabitable room can be accessed from the outside, via a rope ladder. From there, a wooden staircase led to the lookout area on the terrace. This way, watchmen could carry out their duties without the risk of being overpowered by pirates.<\/span><\/p><p><b style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The Cap d\u2019Or tower in Moraira <\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">directly communicated with another two towers, those of Ifach and Granadella. A small control post was responsible for sending signals to these two watchtowers whenever threats were detected. They did so by setting fires on the roof. This was how inland villages \u2013 the real target of the Algerian corsairs\u2019 pillaging \u2013 were warned.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2573ea1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2573ea1\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c47fbed\" data-id=\"c47fbed\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e19d420 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e19d420\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Location and panoramic views from the Cap d\u2019Or\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad87231 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad87231\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cap d\u2019Or is a rocky promontory over the coast of Moraira \u2013 a point that juts out over the land and into the sea. The <\/span><b>Moraira Cap d\u2019Or tower <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was built at its peak, at a height of more than 160 metres, right on the edge of the cliffs.<\/span><\/p><p><b>The views are spectacular from the viewpoint, spanning the entire coastline <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Punta Estrella, to the south, to the island of El Descubridor, to the north, especially if you bring a good pair of binoculars. On very clear days, you can even make out the island of Ibiza.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-afca83d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"afca83d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1552b43\" data-id=\"1552b43\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7362b80 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7362b80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the top of the tower is not accessible, <\/span><b>you can look out over the bay of Moraira <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the plateau. It\u2019s quite possible that the two cannons found 40 years ago at the construction site were used to defend this port.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">At the same height, and just a stone\u2019s throw away, you can also find <\/span><b style=\"background-color: transparent;\">the remains of an Iberian settlement<\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">, as well as a water cistern constructed for this settlement and later used to supply the men of the tower\u2019s control post.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The walk to its location is very pleasant and offers excellent panoramic views. Along the way, you\u2019ll pass by the <\/span><b style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Cova de la Cendra<\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">, one of the largest Palaeolithic sites in the area. Along the <\/span><b>SL-CV 51 trail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll discover various stone or wooden benches. As well as offering a place to rest, these were installed to operate as small viewpoints from which to recreate the view or take photos. During the walk, you\u2019ll be able to admire the many <\/span><b>cliffs between Benitatxell and Moraira<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">And once you reach the promontory, you\u2019ll begin to feel history overcome you. Your gaze immediately focuses on the impressive tower before moving directly to the sea, as if scanning the sails on the horizon.
